Getting started
What documents Ushuru needs to file
A short, plain checklist of everything we ask for — and why each one matters for an accurate, stress-free return.
The short list
To reconcile and file an accurate return, here's what we ask for. You won't need all of these — just the ones that apply to you.
- Your KRA PIN — so we know whose return we're working on.
- The autopopulated ITR from iTax — KRA's prefilled return. (See How to download your autopopulated ITR.)
- Your P9 form — if you're employed, your employer issues this each year. It shows your salary, PAYE deducted, and reliefs.
- Withholding tax (WHT) certificates — if anyone paid you and deducted tax (consultancy, professional fees, rent, dividends), you'll have certificates on iTax.
- The General Ledger / GL report — if you run a business or side hustle, this helps us reconcile income and expenses.
- M-Pesa or bank statements — only if we need to confirm income that didn't show up anywhere else.
Why each one matters
KRA's prefilled return is a starting point, not the final word. Employers and payers sometimes report late or wrong, and side income often doesn't appear at all. By cross-checking your P9 and WHT certificates against the autopopulated ITR, we make sure you neither overpay nor under-declare.
Good to know: withholding tax on professional and consultancy fees is 5%, and it's a prepayment — not a final tax. So even if tax was already deducted, you still file a return, and we work out whether you're owed a refund or owe a top-up.
Privacy, briefly
We only ask for what we need to file. Your documents are encrypted, never sold, and you can ask us to delete them at any time. Read the full Privacy Policy if you'd like the detail.
Don't have everything?
Send what you have. Half the job is figuring out what's missing — message us on WhatsApp and we'll tell you exactly which document to grab next.
