Getting started

How to download your autopopulated ITR from iTax

A step-by-step walkthrough to grab the prefilled income-tax return KRA already has waiting for you on iTax.

Why you need it

When you message Ushuru to file, the first thing we ask for is your autopopulated ITR — the income-tax return KRA has already prefilled with what employers, banks and payers reported about you. It is the single most useful document we can read, because it shows us what KRA thinks you earned before you change a thing.

Karibu — let's grab it together. It takes about three minutes.

Step by step on iTax

  1. Go to itax.kra.go.ke and log in with your KRA PIN and password. Forgot the password? Use "Forgot Password / Unlock Account" and KRA emails you a reset.
  2. On the red menu bar, hover Returns, then click File Return.
  3. Under Tax Obligation choose Income Tax - Resident Individual and press Next.
  4. On the return page, look for the download link for the prefilled / autopopulated return. KRA gives you an Excel (.zip that unzips to a macro-enabled .xlsm) workbook.
  5. Save that file somewhere you can find it — your Downloads folder is fine.

Now send it to Ushuru

Open WhatsApp, forward us that file (the .zip, .xlsm, or even a clear screenshot of the figures if you're stuck), and we'll read it for you. You don't have to understand the spreadsheet — that's literally our job.

Heads up: on a Mac the iTax Excel tool sometimes refuses to open the macros. If that happens, don't panic — see our guide Filing your KRA return on a Mac on the blog. You can still file.

What if I can't log in at all?

If your PIN is locked or you never set a password, you can reset it on iTax, or visit a Huduma Centre. Once you're in, come back and send us the file — and we'll take it from there.
